Agnus Dei

Agnus Dei derives its name from the painting, Agnus Dei, by Francisco de Zurbaràn. The symbolic image of a sacrificial lamb on a table with a bold black background in this painting is striking. In a single image, Zurbaràn represents the sacrificial love expressed in the Biblical message. Agnus Dei (translated to Lamb of God), illustrates how profound of a message a symbol can represent.

The symbols used in contemporary language, on the other hand, tend to be more superficial. Emojis and hashtags represent little beyond the surface, but they do exemplify the current postmodern milieu, which values the superficial. This series questions what our culture declares meaningful by juxtaposing the Agnus Dei symbol with emojis, thereby juxtaposing a symbol of layered meaning with a symbol of postmodernity.
